Chandy's advice to farmers

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Chief Minister, Mr Oomen Chandy, has exhorted farmers to brace themselves for a fight to survive in an era of progressive globalisation and liberalisation.

Addressing an audience after giving away the State Farmers' Awards, the Chief Minister emphasised the State Government's increasing focus on sectors such as biotechnology. He called for modernisation in the traditional sector, which alone would ensure the State its space in the emerging global marketplace.

The winners of the awards are the Nenmeni Nellulpadaka Patasekharasamiti of Kollengode (the Nelkathir Award for Group Farming), Mr Mampuzha Mathew of Malappuram (the Karshakothama Award for the Best Farmer), and Mr C. C. James of Kozhikode (the Kshiradhara Award for the Best Dairy Farmer).

Among others who spoke on the occasion were the Agriculture Minister, Ms K. R. Gowri Amma, the Agriculture Production Commissioner, Mr C. Ramachandran, the Principal Secretary, Agriculture, Mr Mathew C. Kunnumkal, and the Director, Agriculture, Mr Jyothilal.
