Directive on houseboats in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Lok Ayukta has directed the State Pollution Control Board, Alappuzha, that clearance certificates be provided to houseboats operating in the Punnamada backwaters only after ensuring that they would not discharge contaminated water or oil into the lake.

The direction was issued on the basis of a complaint filed by the Alappuzha Town Consumers' Association.

The Lok Ayukta's order further said that the houseboat owners should be given a month's time to obtain the certificate issued by the environmental engineer of the Pollution Control Board.
