Novartis launches Otrivin-O spray

MUMBAI: Novartis Consumer Health Sector, part of Novartis' operations in India, has introduced Otrivin-O, a nasal decongestant in a direct acting spray format.

Otrivin-O will be available over-the-counter (OTC) at chemist stores, a company communiqué said. It is priced at Rs 26 for a 10 ml unit and Rs 33.50 for 15 ml.

The direct action spray Otrivin-O is an off-shoot of the parent brand Otrivin, which is over four-and-a-half decades old. Otrivin is a prescription drug and Otrivin-O is seen by industry-watchers as among the first steps being taken by drug companies to exploit the OTC category.

The product is positioned to be part of the cough/cold and allergies segment an estimated Rs 1,520 crore market in India. Of this, the nasal decongestion segment is about Rs 66 crore, industry analysts said.

OTC nasal decongestion segment comprises remedies ranging from balms to tablets and inhalers to nasal drops.

According to the company, Otrivin-o formulation comprises Oxymetazoline 0.05 per cent and is indicated for the symptomatic relief of nasal congestion due to colds, seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and sinusitis.
