Education Closer ties between IT cos, engg colleges mooted Our Bureau
Kolkata , Sept. 16 THE Principal Secretary in West Bengal's Department of Information Technology, Dr G.D. Gautama, has underscored the need for the IT industry to forge linkages with technical education institutes in the State to ensure there was no mismatch between the demand and supply of IT professionals in the future. Speaking at a seminar on `Accelerating information technology in West Bengal' organised here by the Bharat Chamber of Commerce, Dr Gautama said that West Bengal's target was to account for 15 per cent of the country's IT revenue and 20 per cent of the ITES revenue by 2010. If the State were to achieve this, then the IT and ITES sectors would require the deployment of 1,75,000 IT and 2,30,000 ITES professionals by that time. At present, 21,000 professionals are engaged in the IT sector. Dr Gautama said that, at present, there were a total of 67 engineering colleges in the State. Besides beefing up the technical education infrastructure, it would be imperative for the IT industry to collaborate with the educational institutes so that the latter would be able to provide skills that were just appropriate for the former. "In the BPO segment, we have just touched the tip of the iceberg. In the voice-based call centre business, West Bengal has a huge advantage in terms of the availability of accent-neutral, English-speaking graduates," he said. Earlier, the President of Bharat Chamber of Commerce, Mr N.R. Goenka, said units registered with the Software Technology Park here had performed well on the export front.
