Human Resources `Qualitative changes in work culture need of the hour' Our Bureau
Mangalore , Sept. 16 THERE is a need for bringing about qualitative changes in the work culture to sustain in the competitive world, according to the Vice-President (Personnel), Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd, Mr V.K. Thalithaya. Presiding over the Workers' Education Day programme, organised by the Central Board of Workers' Education (CBWE), in Mangalore on Thursday, he said that CBWE should think of introducing such a concept in its activities. It is essential for the workers to learn new things to compete in the world market, he said, adding that CBWE could consider opening an information centre in this regard. Tracing the history of the establishment of CBWE, he said it was set up five decades ago to impart training to workers to tackle the complexities of industrialisation. However, the country has developed a lot in the past five decades, he added. The General Manager of the BASF India Pvt Ltd, Mr P.P. Shetty, who delivered a lecture at a seminar on "Industrial relations: Changed scenario" organised on the occasion, said that the Government should go ahead with labour law reforms to strengthen the economy and industry. Prior to this, it should consult employers and labour unions. He urged the trade unions to play a constructive role in the industry, and said that they should organise worker education programme for achieving better quality of work, safety consciousness, teamwork and productivity. Trade union leaders should act as "change agents" in line with the competitive environment. Mr Shetty said that managements should consider the views of employees, their concerns and suggestions while implementing new ideas. They should assist workers by organising skill development programmes, he added. The Mangalore MLA, Mr Yogish Bhat, the proprietor of Achal Cashew Industries, Mr G. Giridhar Prabhu, and the Secretary of the New Mangalore Port Trust, Mr P. Girish Nayak, spoke.
