Kakinada , Sept. 16

A sum of Rs 11 crore is being sanctioned by the Union Government through the Coconut Board for controlling eriophyd mite afflicting the coconut crop in Andhra Pradesh, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, State Agriculture Minister, said.

He was participating in a review meeting at the collectorate here on Wednesday evening. He said the pest had affected the crop in the other southern States too and it had arrived in Andhra Pradesh after the 1996 cyclone, causing great damage.

The minister said the coconut crop on more than two lakh acres — with the two Godavari districts accounting for the bulk of acreage — were affected by the pest. The previous Telugu Desam Government had made certain attempts to curb it but without much success.

Mr Reddy said his Government would take all steps to get the funds released as soon as possible and to provide the necessary technical support to farmers. He advised coconut farmers to go in for inter crops to maximise returns and to reduce the losses to an extent.
