Events Panel meet on Sept 20 to discuss AP farm crisis Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Sept. 14 THE Commission on Farmers' Welfare, headed by Prof Jayati Ghosh of Jawaharlal Nehru University, will hold its first meeting here on September 20 to discuss the agricultural crisis in Andhra Pradesh. The commission comprises 13 members and eight special invitees, according to Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, Minister for Agriculture. The commission will visit Anantapur district on September to study the ground realities there. "It will submits its report in two months and cease to exist thereafter," the Minister said. The State Government announced setting up of the commission following a recommendation by the Cabinet sub-committee that looked into widespread suicides by farmers. Speaking to newspersons on Tuesday, the Minister said that the Government issued an order last week notifying terms of reference for the commission. It would study the reasons for the distress of the farming community and recommend measures to improve agricultural productivity. It would also suggest modalities for the upcoming Agriculture Technology Mission. The commission consists of some top economists, experts on agriculture and social scientists. The list includes Prof M.S. Swaminathan (Swaminathan Foundation), Prof K.R. Chowdary (President of Indian Rural Development Congress), Prof D. Narasimha Reddy (Hyderabad Central University) and Prof S. Mahendra Dev (Centre for Economic and Social Studies).
