`Soft' campaign to collect tax arrears

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Sept. 13

THE Finance Ministry has launched a multi-media campaign that seeks to send a signal to the citizens of the country that the Revenue Department is "friendly to the taxpayer" and that the taxes should be paid without any fear of the tax collectors.

"The advertising campaign is a soft campaign, but it is backed by the determination to collect the tax due including the arrears. The soft campaign should not be misunderstood for softness in determination", the Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, told newspersons here.

The campaign, which will be initially confined to the print media, would also later go on to radio and television.

The Finance Minister urged the tax assesses who are required to pay advance tax to promptly pay their advance tax instalment that is falling due on September 15. "People must pay the advance tax in time. I don't want them to fear the tax collectors. But I want them to respect the law ", he said.
