The Hindu Business Line : Rlys to hire 80,000 more to beef up safety

After a two-day conference of General Managers of the zonal railways, the Railway Minister, Mr Lalu Prasad, promised to fill the vacancies for Schedule Castes, Schedule Tribes and other backward castes.

The conference tried to chalk out strategies for implementing the schemes announced in the Common Minimum Programme.

Mr Prasad also said that all districts would have a railway reservation system in two years. Rail commuters will have reservation inquiry facility across the country. The facility has been started at the Patna and Bangalore stations on an experimental basis.

Expressing satisfaction over the performance of the Railways in the past five months, Mr Yadav said a Superfast train at a speed of 150 km per hour would be launched between Delhi and Agra, works for which has been completed. Trains with a speed of 130 kmph will run from different places in the country from next year. `Village on Wheels' - the common man's Palace On Wheels - will be launched by next month.
