Power Need seen for set standards in power generation Our Bureau
Mangalore , Sept. 12 IN an era of reforms there is a need for benchmarking in the electricity generation industry, according to Mr K.S. Balachandra, Project Head (Technical), Nagarjuna Power Corporation Ltd, Bangalore. Each aspect - may be fixing of electricity tariff or adhering to environmental norms - needs a different benchmarking method. Inaugurating a seminar on `Benchmarking, business process re-engineering, and total quality management,' organised by the Mangalore Management Association here, he said that electricity boards had full control over power generation till a decade ago, and there was a fixed power tariff. But things started to change with the beginning of reforms in the power sector. Fixing of tariff plays an important role in the power generation industry, he said, adding that thermal power has the cheapest tariff. On the environmental aspects, he said people in the power sector always try to do better than the prescribed norms. Some of them have better environmental standards than the prescribed ones, he added. The President of the Corporate Consultancy Service, New Delhi, Mr C.K. Muthu, who was the resource person at the seminar, said that it is essential for the managers to listen to the ideas of their colleagues.
