Visakha Dairy milk soon for Kolkata under Amul brand
Visakhapatnam , Sept. 12
PLANS are afoot to market milk from Visakha Co-operative Dairy here in Kolkata under the Amul brand and the initial round of negotiations have been conducted for the purpose, Mr G. Ashabhai Patel, Vice-Chairman of the Gujarat Milk Producers' Co-operative Federation, has said.
At a press meet here on Sunday, after visiting the plant and holding discussions with plant authorities, Mr Patel said Visakha Dairy was one of the best co-operative dairies in the country and it had been developed along the lines of Amul in Gujarat.
"We feel Amul systems and methods have been replicated here and the results have been excellent," he said.
He said the Visakha Dairy authorities had informed the delegation from Gujarat that they would be able to spare 50,000 litres of milk a day for supply to Kolkata.
"But we feel there should at least be one lakh litres a day for the project to be viable. These details will be worked out later. The milk supply is likely to start from October 31,'' he said.
He said already Visakha Dairy was supplying 10,000 litres of milk in tetrapacks for sale under the Amul brand. "We want it enhanced to 50,000 litres," he said.
Mr Patel said dairy co-operatives in the country were doing exceedingly well though the sector was opened to the private sector and still 70 per cent of the business was with the co-operatives.
"If the leaders rise above local politics and petty considerations, the dairy co-operatives can measure up to the competition. The Government policies should also be formulated appropriately," he said.
He said the turnover of Amul amounted to Rs 600 crore per annum and exports accounted for 8 per cent of it. "We want to tap the European markets as well," he added.
