Climate & Weather Monsoon's last phase in Kerala Our Bureau
ALMOST all parts of Kerala are receiving showers under the influence of a resurgent southwest monsoon, which has entered its last phase. According to the Agromet Bulletin dated September 9 issued by the Met Office, Thiruvananthapuram, rainfall for the season ending September 8 was `normal' in Idukki, Kannur, Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram districts and `deficient' in the rest. Chief amounts of rainfall in cm are (September 6 to 9):
Sept 6: Koilandy - 5; Thiruvananthapuram City - 4; Cherthala - 3; Mancompu, Kottayam and Pattambi - 2 each and Kochi Airport, Kudulu, Kumarakom, Vadakara, Thrithala, Thiruvalla, Thiruvananthapuram Airport, Varkala and Kannara - 1 each. Sept 7: Thiruvananthapuram - 8; Thiruvananthapuram Airport - 5; Perumbavur - 4; Aluva and Kodungallur - 2 each; and Haripad, Cochin International Airport, Punalur, Nilambur, Thiruvalla, Varkala and Vadakkancherry - 1 each. Sept 8: Thiruvananthapuram - 3; Manjeri, Mannarkad and Kodungallur - 2 each; and Kannur, Pattambi, Varkala, Thiruvananthapuram Airport and Kunnamkulam - 1 each. Mean relative humidity varied between 66 per cent and 89 per cent, mean cloud coverage between five okta and seven okta and mean wind speed, two kmph and 10 kmph. Forecast valid until the morning of September 11 spoke about the possibility of rain at many places in all districts. Outlook for the two subsequent days did not indicate any significant change. Stage and state of crops: Harvesting is in progress in `Virippu' paddy, while the `Mundakan, crop is in the nursery to transplanting stage. Weeding and manuring are being carried out in coconut, arecanut, pepper, banana, rubber, tapioca and vegetables. Farm advisory: Harvesting of the `Virippu' crop and nursery maintenance and transplanting of the `Mundakan' crop can be continued with. New planting can be taken up in banana, tubers and seasonal vegetables. Spraying of one per cent Bordeaux Mixture is indicated for controlling wilt in pepper, leaf rot in coconut and `Mahali' in arecanut. A severe infestation of brown plant hopper has been reported from Palakkad. Draining of the fields is recommended for controlling pest population.
