Industry & Economy - Knitwear & Hosiery

A full-fledged solution provider

G. Gurumurthy

Coimbatore , Sept. 10

WHAT will happen if the 700-odd dyeing and bleaching units in the hosiery town of Tirupur which had originally agreed to avail the private water supply from New Tirupur Area Development Corporation Ltd's BOOT (built-own-operate-transfer) project fail to turn up in the same numbers.

Will it lead to the BOOT operator of the project running it under-capacity or under-selling the project?

At the other end of the spectrum is what will happen if the existing dyeing and bleaching units starved of water opt for installation of advanced effluent treatment plants and, thereby, achieving the `zero' discharge of effluents and recycling of the water for their dyeing use?

These are perhaps some of the queries that often surface among the prospective users of the special purpose company's water project in Tirupur of late to

In both eventuality, the special purpose vehicle company, NTADCL, will be improving its stature as the water infrastructure company or even may turn out to be a fulfledged solution provider to the region's water and technology starved wet-processing industries.

This is the impression one may gain going by the response and the confidence levels the NTADCL's water project execution has sought to build steadily.

In the first place, the demand for water for wet processing for the knitwear industry has been so huge that even if the number of originally listed dyeing units that sought to buy water from NTADCL fell, there has been scope for the SPV to find new buyers or units that need higher water demand to bridge the gap.

Mr Samir Vyas, Managing Director of the corporation, confided that already the NTADCL has been approached by Tamil Nadu Small Industries Promotion Corporation Ltd from the Erode district for supplying to the industrial units in its Perundurai industrial estate.

Another new client for the water facility is the new Nethaji Apparel Park being promoted by the members of the Tirupur Exporters Association as the park authorities have asked NTADCL to supply one million litre per day for the use of the 70-odd participant-industries in the proposed park coming up on the Coimbatore-Erode sector of the National Highway No.7.

The SPV is to concede this demand.

The Tirupur-based dyeing units have approached NTADCL seeking help in handling the effluent treatment at a common level.

`We have offered to help the industry out on this and as in the case of the commercial water supply, we could even think of bringing them the necessary technology to tackle the hosiery pollution but it would involve some cost. The dyeing industry has to get back to us', Mr Vyas said.
