Aquaculture Marketing - Standards & Benchmarks `Most seafood cos have employed safe processing system' Our Bureau
Mangalore , Sept. 9 THE Technical Officer of the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), Mr V.I. George, has said of the 360 seafood processing plants currently functioning in the country, almost all have implemented the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system. He said, "This includes 149 companies approved for export to European Union also. All of them have their own HACCP plans/manuals. "Of the 360 seafood processing plants, 165 HACCP manuals have been certified by MPEDA and 45 HACCP compliance certificates have been issued, as on July 2004. One of the reasons for issuing less number of compliance certificates is that although the implementation of HACCP system is made mandatory, obtaining certification from MPEDA is not a mandatory one. "It does never mean that other companies (without certified manuals) have not implemented the HACCP," he added.
