BY ascribing the rising inflation to `extraneous factors', the Centre has been trying `transfer responsibility' for inflation that has galloped past the 8 per cent mark, according to Mr Jaswant Singh, former Finance Minister.

In a brief chat with the media at the Coimbatore airport, Mr Singh, who is on a private visit, described inflation as the worst form of taxation that hit the poor and housewives without their being aware of it.

Referring to inflation touching 8.17 per cent mark, he said it was akin to tax on the poor.

He said no significant steps had been taken to contain spiralling inflation.

Meanwhile, the Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Mr Oscar Fernandes, has blamed the previous NDA Government at the Centre for the flare up in inflation the country has been witnessing in the past few weeks.
