THE Designated Authority in the Commerce Ministry has initiated an anti-dumping probe on all imports of citric acid from China, South Korea and Ukraine.
The domestic manufacturers of citric acid have, in the recent years, been crying foul over the cheap imports of citric acid from countries such as China and Thailand, stating that such cheap imports had adversely impacted their profit margins.
Solaris Biochemicals, which has a 25,000-tonne per annum citric acid manufacturing unit near Baroda, has filed the petition seeking anti-dumping investigation on imports of citric acid from China, South Korea and Ukraine.
Citric acid is a basic chemical that is used as a preservative in food, soft drinks and confectionary. It is also used in drugs, textile dyeing and printing industry.
The Finance Ministry had, in March 2003, imposed definitive anti-dumping duty on imports of citric acid from Indonesia and Thailand.
