New Delhi , Sept. 2

The Union Commerce Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, on Thursday asserted that units in the agri export zones (AEZs) would be allowed duty-free import of capital goods under the export promotion capital goods scheme (EPCG). He maintained that there was no move to review or rollback this policy announcement that was made on Tuesday in the Foreign Trade Policy for 2004-2009.

"The policy announcement allowing units in AEZs to import capital goods duty free under the EPCG scheme is here to stay and there are no issues with the Finance Ministry on the same," Mr Kamal Nath told presspersons on the sidelines of an interactive session on the new Foreign Trade Policy, organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

In his address, the Commerce Minister said that he would see to it that every policy announcement made in the FTP is implemented in both letter and spirit.

On the proposed special economic zone (SEZ) Bill, Mr Kamal Nath said that his Ministry would soon write to the financial institutions to get their views as to how much funding they would be ready to make towards SEZs if the Bill were to be passed in the current form.
