Hyderabad , Aug. 29

AFTER witnessing a 50 per cent growth in domestic and foreign tourist arrivals last year, Rajasthan is trying to expand the scope of tourism offerings by exploring new destinations and festivals.

The idea is to tap the April-September period, making Rajasthan an all-year tourism destination. Announcing Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation Ltd's plans here on Saturday, its Executive Director, Ms Aparna Sahay, said the Corporation had taken up a variety of projects to widen the scope of tourism in the State.

"We are developing new circuits, restoring some old forts and taking up an audit of district-wise places of tourism interest," she said.

A Rs 125-crore eco-tourism destination would be developed on a 100-acre plot in the State, she said.Ms Sahay was here to showcase her State's tourism potential at the Travel and Tourism Fair-2004 here.

Stating that Rajasthan recorded one of the highest number of tourist arrivals, she said response to Palace on Wheels had been tremendous.

"In the first six months of 2004, foreign tourist arrivals in the State went up by 66 per cent (a total of 3.85 lakh visitors) as against a national average of 24.9 per cent. ."
