New Delhi , Aug. 21

THE Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Mr E.V.K.S. Elangovan, on Saturday called upon the publishing industry to work on the content as well as quality enhancement in order to meet the challenges of high-quality books being increasingly sought by discerning readers across the country.

Inaugurating the nine-day long Delhi Book Fair, tenth in an annual series here at the Pragati Maidan, the sprawling exhibition complex of the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), the Minister reminded the industry of the tasks ahead due to the mounting demand for books as a result of greater literacy in the country.

He also lauded the role of Indian publishing industry in the freedom struggle as well as social development of the nation by providing a creative outlet for free expression of thoughts and ideas.

In his welcome address, the ITPO Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Mr N. N. Khanna, said that this year's book fair was supplemented by a spate of topical seminars on different aspects of book publishing, interspersed with book releases and the `Meet the Author' programme.
