Broadcasters hiking stake to acquire cricket rights

IN a last ditch effort to acquire the cricket rights of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), broadcasters are upping their stake by offering additional incentive. ESPN Software India Pvt Ltd for instance, has offered to purchase rights for additional years for about Rs 300 crore.
Sources in ESPN said, "We have made this offer in our bid document." The Zee Group, which has emerged as the highest bidder, has offered to promote domestic cricket in a big way. BCCI has received bids for matches to be held in India till September 2007. A final decision on the rights is still awaited.
Meanwhile, the cricket board on Monday announced a multi-crore tie-up with Reliance Industries for setting up a hi-tech communication facility for overall betterment of the game. The BCCI President, Mr Jagmohan Dalmiya, said Reliance Industries would be given the status of `official IT partner' of the board. The company, he said, would carry out a Rs 5-7 crore project for setting up communication facilities and technical support system like video conferencing, for technical matters pertaining to age determination of players, injury problems, ground and wicket preparations.
