TN: 50,000 ha for samba cultivation

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: With the release of water from the Mettur reservoir, the Agriculture Department Officials in Tiruchi, are confident of covering 50,000 hectares in the district under samba cultivation.

Though doubts are expressed on the adequacy of the current storage in the reservoir to last for the entire duration of the crop in the delta area, officials do not foresee much problem, it is said, as the district has received some good rainfall this year.

The department officials feel that about 30,000 hectares would be from Cauvery irrigated areas and 20,000 hectares in other parts. Last year, only about 31,000 hectares were covered.

The department has 240 tonnes of seeds and 490 tonnes of seeds are available with private agencies. The seeds of Aduthurai-43 ASD-19 and Tiruchi-I would be supplied to the farmers at a subsidy of Rs 2 per kg, the sources said.
