SBI attending to ATM snags

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore , Aug. 13

STATE Bank of India is taking steps to tackle the problem of `system overhang' in its ATMs.

Bank sources, while conceding that their ATMs have been encountering frequent disruptions in the last few days because of undue pressure on the load, confirmed to Business Line that they were taking adequate measures to check and resolve the issue.

Though the trouble appears to have started during the last week of June, the trickle effect is believed to have become more pronounced four weeks laterand since then, the complaints from the bank's ATM users have been on the rise.

SBI sources said that the problem was at the switch centre, in its New Mumbai office. "Unlike the new generation banks in the private sector, our ATMs are connected to individual branches and work on a distributed database. ," the source said.

The source said that the bank was taking adequate precautions to ensure a smooth flow during the last week of August. The source, however, did not rule out the possibility of minor disruptions on August 14 and 15, when SBI proposes to segregate the associate banks' database from its own and relocate the switch centre.

The bank has been encouraging its customers to use the ATMs at least for cash withdrawals.
