Outlook Variety - Sports Nimbus looks for rich haul from cricket telecasts Our Bureau
Mumbai , Aug. 13 NIMBUS Communications Ltd expects to garner around Rs 300 crore from the recent agreement signed with Doordarshan and Global Cricket Corporation (GCC) to telecast major ICC events for the period 2004-2007. Mr Sunil Manocha of Nimbus: "We expect to garner around Rs 300 crore from the ICC Champions Trophy 2004, the ICC Champions Trophy 2006 and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007." Following on from the successful telecast of the ICC Champions Trophy 2002 and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003 on DD; GCC, Doordarshan and Nimbus will continue to telecast major ICC events for the period 2004-2007. GCC, which is the worldwide rights owner of the ICC events till 2007, pursues, along with its revenue objectives, the goal of widest possible reach on television for the ICC events, to develop the popularity of the sport and deliver maximum value to the official partner and sponsors. Mr Ian Frykberg of GCC in a press statement said: "Doordarshan's 80-plus million homes reach serves as an ideal platform to showcase the biggest cricket tournaments in the world and we are pleased that this deal will assist DD in furthering its public service mission." DD gets a revenue share towards network telecast fees, accompanied by a minimum guarantee, which, in turn, is backed by bank guarantees provided by Nimbus. DD is not required to make any investment in rights fees under this arrangement, the release stated. DD will telecast live nine matches each from the ICC Champions Trophy and 19 from the ICC Cricket World Cup, including all India matches, semis and finals and `big gun' matches, particularly on weekends. GCC has appointed Nimbus Communications Ltd, India's leading broadcast airtime and sponsorship marketing company to exclusively handle on-air sales of these events, the release added.
