Seeds TNAU spots six centres to produce quality seeds Our Correspondent
Madurai , Aug. 6 THE Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has identified six centres for commercial production of quality seeds. According to Prof S. Jebaraj, Head, The National Pulses Research Centre (NPRC), Vamban in Pudukottai district, the initiative is being taken up under the quality seed production programme and to do away with the conventional varieties. At present, farmers are getting their seeds from agricultural depots, which may not have the latest variety of seeds. Alternatively, farmers produce their own seeds that may not possess the requisite quality. Use of quality seeds enables the farmers to get an increase of 20 to 25 per cent in yield, he said. The five centres identified for the purpose, apart from NPRC, are the Agricultural Research Station at Bhavanisagar in Erode district, the Agricultural Research Station at Vaigai dam in Madurai district, the Tamilnadu Rice Research Institute at Aduthurai in Thanjavur district, the Agricultural College and Research Institute at Killikulam in Tuticorin district, and the Department of Seed Science and Technology, TNAU, Coimbatore.
