Cases against PW emissaries may be scrapped

Hyderabad , July 30

THE State Government today hinted at revoking the criminal cases registered on three People's War emissaries by the Warangal police on Thursday.

The cases were registered on Mr P. Vara Vara Rao, Mr Gaddar and Mr G. Kalyan Rao for making "provocative speeches" on July 28, inciting people for armed struggle.

There were apprehensions that the police move might disrupt the talk process, set off by the Congress Government soon after assuming power.

Addressing a news conference here on Friday, Mr K. Jana Reddy, the Home Minister, said the police were to send a report on the issue. "We will study the report and review it," he said, hinting at withdrawing the cases.

Commenting on the cases registered against them, Mr Vara Vara Rao reportedly threatened to stay away from the process until the cases were revoked. Mr Gaddar had said cases were aimed at curbing freedom of speech.

Asked for his reaction to these statements, Mr Jana Reddy hoped that the incident would not have an adverse impact on the ongoing peace process.

Asked whether the Warangal police had informed the Government before registering the cases, Mr Jana Reddy said they were just following the law and did not inform the Government about the cases.

While defending the police, he clarified that it would take some time before the spirit of achieving peace in the State percolated down to different layers of the department.

He said he had not yet seen the content of the speeches made by the PW emissaries at the Yenumamula market yard. The meeting, the first by PW after the expiry of the ban, was organised to mark the Martyr's Day observed annually by Naxalites on July 28.
