Plea on Khadi rebate during Onam
Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Rural Development Minister, Mr C. F. Thomas, has requested the Centre that the festival-time rebate of 20 per cent for Khadi be declared ahead of Onam.
Inclusive of the 10 per cent rebate that the State Government declares separately, Khadi normally sells at a 30 per cent rebate during the festival time in the State.
According to the Minister, the Market Development Assistance scheme implemented by the previous Government at the Centre had not proved successful. This scheme had provided for 10 per cent rebate and another 10 per cent for improving the marketing programme. Instead, the Minister demanded that the rebate be declared in one block of 20 per cent as had been done prior to the change effected by the previous Government.
A memorandum to this effect had already been submitted to the Centre. A separate communication had been sent to the Union Minister in Charge. Mr Thomas requested MPs representing the State to take up the matter with the Centre.
