Infrastructure TN bid to expedite Nanguneri park Our Bureau
Chennai , July 29 THE Tamil Nadu Government is pushing the promoters of the Rs 700-crore Nanguneri Hi-tech Industrial Park, ATMAC Ltd, to expedite the project proposed to come up in Tirunelveli. Announcing the steps taken by the State Government in this regard, the Industries Minister, Mr Nainar Nagenthran, said in the Assembly that ATMAC's Managing Director, Mr Charles V. Lucas, had met him on July 8 and informed that they would soon submit a detailed report on starting the project. It may be recalled that ATMAC Ltd was floated as a joint venture between the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) and the US-based INFAC Group and Axes Technologies Inc to set up the Rs 700-crore industrial park. The master plan for the project was by JTC, Singapore. The park was accorded special economic zone status by the Centre. In February 2001, the then Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, laid the foundation stone for the project. Mr Nagenthran said that the State Government had been continuously following up with the promoters to expedite the project. In October 2001, over 1,534 acres land had been transferred to ATMAC. The Government had also granted permission in November 2001 to draw over 3 crore litres of water a day from the Tamaraparani River. The State Government had also come out with a policy to encourage special economic zones in 2003 and laid the foundation stone for four-laning the Tirunelveli-Tuticorin road, he said. Last year, the Government said the Nanguneri project would be re-oriented and clubbed with a similar special economic zone proposed at Tuticorin. In 2002 and 2003, the State Government had e-mailed promoters several times to expedite and achieve financial closure of the project. In July 2003, the Government had also requested the investors to clarify the status of the project in person. The promoters had then asked for six months time and the State Government had given them time till September 18, he said.
