Thiruvananthapuram , July 29

IN a couple of weeks, residents of Malappuram district will be able to make travel bookings or access a range of financial services at the nearest Akshaya `e-kendra.'

In keeping with the Akshaya project's primary objective of "bridging the digital divide," the Department of Information Technology is all set to turn these `e-kendras' into one-stop shops for a bouquet of e-services.

The initiative, which will be formally inaugurated on August 15, will make it possible for people in Malappuram to access around 80 different services at the Akshaya `e-kendras.' Besides making travel bookings through these centres, people will be able to access insurance and financial services, courier services, foreign currency exchange services, and so on, said an official of the IT department. In the case of services such as travel bookings, customers may have to return to the `e-kendras' to pick up their tickets.

Members of the public can also use these `e-kendras' to make utility payments and obtain information on the Government's e-governance initiatives.
