Monsoon revives in north Kerala

Our Bureau

MONSOON rainfall showed signs of revival with the northern districts reporting good showers during the three days ending July 28; but the southern districts of Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram were made to sweat it out as usual, with menacing dark clouds dissipating in no time.

According to the Agromet Bulletin dated July 29 issued by the Met Office, Thiruvananthapuram, rainfall for the two-month season was `normal' in Idukki and Thiruvananthapuram districts and `deficient' in the rest 12 - Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kannur, Kasaragode, Kollam, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur and Wayanad.

Mean relative humidity varied between 69 per cent and 93 per cent in various districts, mean cloud coverage between five and eight okta, and mean wind speed, two and 10 kmph.

Forecast valid until the morning of July 31 spoke about rain at many places in all districts of the State.

Warning: Isolated heavy rain is likely to occur over the State during the next 48 hours (from Thursday).

Outlook for the two subsequent days did not indicate any significant change.

State and stage of crops: The paddy crop is in the panicle emergence stage and need-based plant protection operations are in progress. New planting, fertiliser and organic manure application continue in coconut and arecanut. Pepper is in the spike emergence to flowering stage. Weeding, top dressing and spraying operations are apace in order to control various diseases. Transplanting, weeding and fertiliser application are on in vegetables being timed for harvest during Onam festival. New plantings continue in tapioca, cashew, spices and fruit crops. Onam season banana is in the bunch emergence stage.

Farm advisory: Plant protection measures should be adopted against stem borer and leaf roller attack in the `Virippu' paddy crop, especially in cases where the incidence is severe.

New planting, intercultural operations, fertiliser and organic manure application can be continued in almost all crops.
