Income Tax Industry & Economy - Income Tax I-T Dept may wield survey powers to widen tax base Our Bureau
New Delhi , July 28 FACED with the diktat from the Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, to go after non-salaried tax evaders, the Chief Commissioners of Income-Tax (CCITs) have hit upon the idea of utilising the powers of survey under the I-T law as an effective tool for widening and deepening the tax base. At the just concluded 20th annual conference of Chief Commissioners and Director General of Income-Tax, the officers also resolved to take necessary steps for expeditious and time-bound disposal of all high demand cases at the level of Commissioners of Income-Tax (Appeals)/Income Tax Appellate Tribunal/Settlement Commission, which account for bulk of the arrears' demand. The conference deliberated on the strategies for achieving the direct tax collection target of Rs 1,39,510 crore proposed in budget 2004-05. The strategies discussed include a more effective monitoring of advance tax collections and receipts by way of deduction of tax at source.
