Paper, Board & Newsprint Variety - Books Paper price increase unlikely to impact textbooks this year Our Bureau
New Delhi , July 22 EVEN as a few large paper companies have increased their prices by around 3-4 per cent citing increase in production costs, it is not likely to result in an increase in the prices of paper-based stationery such as notebooks and textbooks since majority of the "text-books and notebooks for this academic year have already been sold". While Ballarpur Industries Ltd (BILT) increased its prices on July 19 by 1.5 per cent following a two per cent increase it had announced in June, the BILT Deputy Managing Director, Mr R.R. Vadhera, attributed the price rise to increase in coal prices and the education cess. Mr Vadhera, who is also the Vice-President of Indian Paper Manufacturers' Association (IPMA), said other paper companies are likely to follow suit. During the past month, paper prices have increased by Rs 750 to Rs 850 per tonne taking the total price of writing and printing paper to about Rs 36,000 a tonne. The Indian Agro and Recycled Paper Mills Association (IARPMA) Secretary General, Mr S.K. Jain, said that the prices of textbooks and notebooks would not be hit since by July most of ``the textbooks and notebooks for the year have been printed as well as sold." "For the paper industry, July to November is considered as lean period since the printing of text-books and notebooks are done primarily between November and May," added Mr Jain. Apart from BILT, the major paper companies include West Coast Paper Ltd, JK Paper and Tamil Nadu Newsprint Ltd.
