Jayalalithaa defends move to curtail TN Budget session

Chennai , July 22

THE Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms Jayalalithaa, on Thursday defended the move to curtail the Budget session of the Assembly, which began today, to just a week.

The State Budget itself had been presented and passed in February before the house was adjourned. Since then, a number of policy decisions had been announced making it unnecessary to have a detailed discussion on the Budget and the demand for grants for various departments.

She made this point at a press conference at the Secretariat in response to the opposition parties' decision to boycott the session on the grounds that the session was being curtailed and not enough time was being given to discuss the budget and various other pressing issues.

She said that after the Budget was presented the House had adjourned due to reasons beyond anybody's control. There had been the Lok Sabha elections and later there had also been many changes announced. The next Budget session was itself due in a few months, and due to these circumstances there was no need for an extended discussion.

The House was adjourned for the day after condoling the deaths of more than 90 children in a fire at a school in Kumbakonam last week.

Ms Jayalalithaa said that the Government was taking stringent action against the school management and the government officials concerned. Action has been initiated against five members in the management and 12 government officials. An enquiry commission has also been set up, and the Government will ensure that such an event does not recur, she said.
