Cultivation Gujarat completes groundnut sowing Dhimant Bhatt
Mumbai , July 21 SOWING in Gujarat has been completed in 62.03 lakh hectares as on July 19, out of the normal kharif area of 82 lakh hectares, according to an official of the State Department of Agriculture. This is 76 per cent of the normal area. The department has set sowing target of 88 lakh hectares for the current kharif season, up from 86 lakh hectares last year. Major crops during current kharif season in the State include groundnut, cotton, moong, sesame, coarse grains and other pulses. "Sowing is in progress thanks to first round of rains in June-end. Now, second round of rains in mid-July is crucial for kharif sowing," officials said. "So far, sowing of three major crops, i.e., groundnut, sesame and moong, have been fully completed. Cotton and soyabean sowing has been completed in 90 per cent of the targeted area," they said. Crop-wise area covered under current kharif season as on July 19 are: groundnut 18.47 lakh hectares (lh), cotton 14.92 lh, sesame 3.69 lh, bajra 6.36 lh, maize 3.54 lh, total area under pulses crop 5.11 lh and total oilseeds crop 22.87 lh. The area under castor has so far reached 54,300 hectares against normal area of 3.3lh.
