Assocham sets up panels on labour issues

Our Bureau

New Delhi , July 16

THE Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) had decided to set up two committees to recommend solutions to the Government on labour-related issues. The committees will be making recommendations in matters relating to a safety net for the abandoned labour force and also suggesting changes and replacement in some of the existing labour laws that have become obsolete.

The Assocham President, Mr Mahendra K. Sanghi, while speaking at a workshop on `Knowledge of labour laws and court judgments essentials for manager' said, these committees have been set up following directions from the Central Government and will submit the report to the Labour Ministry shortly.

Mr Sanghi said the replacement of the existing labour statute has become necessary to introduce modernisation and cost cutting in the industry. He expressed concern saying that the present Government will not have enough courage and political will to introduce legislation seeking amendments in the existing labour laws.
