Hindustan Bio gets nod for importing anaemia drug

HINDUSTAN Bio Sciences Ltd (HBSL) has announced that it has obtained approvals from the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) of the Government of India for importing and marketing recombinant human erythropoietin - bioengineered product.

In a press release, the company said erythropoietin manufactured in China by Shandong Kexing Bio Products Company Ltd and HBSL would be marketed in India soon. Erythropoietin is used in treatment of all kinds of anaemia resulting from chronic renal failure, cancer and AIDS. HBSL proposes to launch the recombinant human erythropoietin in the Indian market under the brand `Eposino' targeting mainly the middle and lower income group patientsunlike similar drugs in the market, such as `Eprex' of Johnson & Johnson, `Hemax' of Hindustan Anti Biotech and `Zyrop' of Zydus Biogen, which, HBSL says, were expensive. When contacted, the HBSL General Manager, Mr K. Ramachandra Raju, told Business Line that the company obtained GEAC approvals in March. Stating that the company is yet to obtain approval from the DCGI, Mr Raju said it was also required to conduct small-scale safety and efficacy studies on patients for launching the product.
