Low-cost Air Arabia keen to fly to India

New Delhi , July 7

THE Sharjah-based low-cost airline, Air Arabia, is keen to start operating flights to India, its Chief Executive Officer, Mr Adel Ali, said on Monday.

"We have already filed a request to fly to India. We are open to discuss on which sectors we would like to fly because India is a sub-continent. To fly to India is an aspiration not only for us but also for the Indian community in the Gulf," Mr Ali said. He said the airline would be keen to operate flights to Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and several cities in south India.

The eight-month old airline already operates to 17 destinations around the globe, including Colombo. Mr Ali said the airline network would have grown faster but for problems in aircraft deliveries.

Asked as to by how much air fares would move down with the arrival of Air Arabia on the India-Gulf sector, Mr Ali said the airline traditionally "offered fares which were 20-40 per cent lower" than what was available in the market. However, Mr Ali felt that the entry of low-cost airline on the India-Gulf sector would not affect the existing airlines, especially as the airlines' experience had been that most low-cost airline had never made an impact on traditional airline business.
