AP brewers call for reforms in excise policy

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , July 7

SEEKING an early revival of the brewery industry in Andhra Pradesh, the country's largest market in terms of volumes, the All India Brewers' Association (AIBA) has urged the State Government to initiate reforms in the excise and distribution policy of the beer trade in the State.

The AIBA spokesperson, Mr Ashok Dhingra, told presspersons here that though the consumer price of beer in Andhra Pradesh is one of the highest in the country, the industry is on the brink of turning sick because of no increase in basic prices for the last six years.

According to him, on the average the beer industry makes a paltry eight per cent margin before overheads and fixed costs, while sources of Government revenue amount to more than 44 per cent of the available value chain margin, while retailers make more than 25 per cent of the value chain margin.

"The industry margin has shrunk by more than 35 per cent in the past six years making it an unattractive and unviable industry," Mr Dhingra said.
