Panchayats ask APTransco to clear all tax dues

Hyderabad , July 5

THE Andhra Pradesh Panchayatraj Chamber has asked the Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (APTransco) to clear all the tax dues it owed to 21,943 panchayats in the State.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Mr Y. Babu Ranjendraprasad, President of the chamber, contested the Government's statement in the Assembly that APTransco had paid all the dues.

He alleged that the power utility did not pay tax for their poles, transformers and electric sub-stations.

The chamber demanded that APTransco should pay business licence fee, encroachment fee and professional tax.

Briefing about the resolutions passed in the State committee meeting of the chamber held at the weekend, he said the members wanted the Government to restore free supply of power to all the street lights like the APSEB used to do in the past.

"All the panchayats, 1,104 mandal parishads and 22 zilla parishads are starved of funds," it said.

Mr Rajendraprasad said the Government owed Rs 456 crore in the form of dues for the last three years. "Under the 11th Finance Commission, panchayats are to get Rs 152 crore each for 2002-03, 2003-04 and 2004-05," he said.

The chamber also passed a resolution demanding the Government to release professional tax dues to the tune of Rs 600 crore.
