`Retain steel yard at all cost'

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Leader of the Opposition, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, has said that the State Government should seek to retain the steel stockyard of the Steel Authority of India (SAI), located in Kochi, at all cost.

In a statement issued here, he said the SAI had been manoeuvring to relocate the stockyard from Willington Island to Tripunithura since the space available at Willington Island was not sufficient.

Twelve acres of land had been acquired by SAI at Tripunithura for the purpose. However, the Indian Railways had reportedly gone back on its promise to provide a rail transportation link to the new location. The SAI was now contemplating the abandonment of the project altogether.

Mr Achuthanandan asked the State Government to persuade the SAI and the Indian Railways to sort out their differences in order that the yard is retained.
