Agricultural Policy `Nabard to work closely with co-ops, RRBs' Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , July 4 THE National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) will become more pro-active and work closely with co-operative, commercial and regional rural banks in the days to come, according to Ms Ranjana Kumar, Chairperson. Inaugurating the new office of Nabard's regional office here, she said the bank has tremendous responsibility and will share its expertise acquired over the last 22 years with the other banks in the country. Ms Kumar said Nabard would work closely with them to ensure a healthy trend in credit dispensation. The aim should be to make available timely and adequate credit to the farmers and all the agencies should join hands for the prosperity of the country's agriculture sector. The revitalisation of the cooperatives would also bring about the desired results in effectively meeting the credit needs of the farm sector. Ms Kumar, while explaining the recent policy initiatives to further bring down the interest rates of farm credit, noted that timely and adequate credit alone would make agriculture a viable proposition. She also called upon the governments to provide the necessary infrastructure in the rural areas for improving the productivity of bank credit. She said that she had detailed discussions with the Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, and top officials of the Kerala Government on many crucial issues confronting the State. The Nabard will help the self-help groups in the State for capacity building, she added. The Vice-Chairman of the State Planning Board, Mr V. Ramachandran, said that Nabard will have to play a major role as the farmers and the country's agriculture sector itself were riddled with a host of problems.
