Events Concern over soil fertility Our Correspondent
The Dean of the Agriculture College and Research Institute, Madurai, Dr N. Kembu Chetty, expressing his concern over depletion of soil fertility, said that sophisticated technologies would not help enhance the yield without soil fertility. At present, the organic matter in the soil has been reduced to 0.68 percent as against the average level of 1.2 percent for the past 30 years. Nutrient deficiency in soil can be rectified through mulching. High-density planting and canopy management could be adopted to improve the yield, he suggested. Dr S. Anbu, Dean, HCRS, said cover cropping using leguminous drought-tolerant plants with high biomass and mulching with composted coconut coir waste were major systems in soil fertility.
