Coimbatore , July 4 DR Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology (MCET) has joined hands with Covansys (India) Private Ltd to offer industry-oriented training to its students on mainframe skills. An MoU to this effect was signed between the Pollachi-based educational institute MCET and the Chennai-based IT company Covansys on Friday. Briefing press persons, the CEO and President of Covansys, Mr K. Subramaniam, said this was the first time that such a tie-up was established between his company and an educational institution. The `Mainframe Excellence Centre @MCET' he said, would help the students acquire skills at affordable rates. Students would be able take practical lessons by logging on directly to the mainframe computers at Covansys from the labs at MCET. The facilities such as the 2 mbps Internet-leased line, virtual classroom and the Internet Data Centre within the college campus facilitated the establishment of such a centre, he said. The job-oriented training to be imparted at this centre would help improve job prospects for students, he said.`Mainframes are large computers capable of handling large applications and databases that are used in financial institutions, large retail chains, weather forecasting etc. Nearly 60 per cent of commercial application systems run on mainframes,' Mr Subramaniam said.
