`CAs must not look for protection from global competition'

K.R.Srivats

New Delhi , July 2

THE Centre has made it clear to the chartered accountants that they should not look for "protective cover" against competition from foreign service providers. At the same time, the Government has also assured them that "reciprocal arrangements" would be the hallmark of its policy stance on any international negotiations on accountancy services.

Addressing members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) here on the occasion of `Chartered Accountants Day', Mr Prem Chand Gupta, Union Minister of State for Company Affairs (independent charge), asked the ICAI to work out "best steps to make Indian CA's globally competitive".

"While globalisation has opened window of opportunities in export of accountancy services and employment opportunities in multinational companies, it has also brought market challenges from the transnational entities. However, these are not reasons for us to despair," Mr Gupta said.
