UBI credit for Bengal at Rs 5,408 crore

Kolkata , June 30

UNITED Bank of India has proposed to revise its annual credit plan for 2003-04 from Rs 4,680 crore to Rs 5,408 crore for West Bengal.

Advances by the bank in the State have increased by 14 per cent, while its deposits have grown by 13 per cent during the year ended March, 2004. These figures have emerged from the 87th State Level Bankers' Committee meeting held earlier this week.

The achievement under the annual plan was Rs 4,900 crore, an attainment of 91 per cent of the plan level. The credit plan for 2004-05 has been worked out already; the plan for West Bengal involves Rs 6,740 crore.

Keeping in view the decision by the Union Government to double agricultural credit in three years, the district credit plan prepared here reflects a growth of 74 per cent in the current year. The idea is to reach a level of Rs 2,400 crore, up from Rs 1,357 crore, the bank has informed. It was proposed that about 2.92 lakh farmers would be brought under bank finance during the year. Issuance of three lakh Kisan credit cards was also mooted; of this, 2.25 lakhs would be covered by commercial banks and the remaining 75,000 would be covered by Rural Banks. It was further decided that financing of plantations, horticulture and fisheries would be taken up seriously. Also, district-wise allocations for financing at least ten agro-clinics during the year were decided.

The meeting proposed to set up a committee (consisting representatives of SBI, UBI, Allahabad Bank, UCO Bank, Central Bank of India etc) to monitor the progress on a monthly basis. The UBI's general manager (priority sector) would be the convenor of the committee
