Banks in Dakshina Kannada cross Rs 8,600-cr business

BUSINESS generated by banks in Dakshina Kannada district has crossed Rs 8,600 crore as on March 31, 2004. As many as 339 branches of various banks collected deposits worth Rs 5,844 crore and advances worth Rs 2,803 crore.

This was informed to the District Consultative Committee Meeting for banking development. The meeting was organised by Syndicate Bank, the lead bank of the district.

A press release said here that the committee reviewed the performance of banks under banking statistics, implementation of district credit plan, and Government-sponsored schemes. Under the district credit plan, banks disbursed Rs 1,323 crore during 2003-04 against the target of Rs 951 crore and Rs 711 crore was disbursed to priority sector. Of this, Rs 227 crore was advanced to agriculture sector. In his welcome address, the Regional Manager of Syndicate Bank, Mr B.K. Bhat, emphasised the need for improving lending to the agriculture sector.
