ONGC move opposed

Our Bureau

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS) has criticised the move of the Oil & Natural Gas Corporation to shift its port operational base from here to Kakinada.

The HMS Vice-President, Mr D.K. Sarma, said in a press release here on Wednesday that it would adversely affect the working conditions of the staff and the functioning of ONGC would be affected. The State Council of HMS will oppose the move, he said.

He said it was true that the Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) had initially asked ONGC to vacate the port area of 9,396 sq.m. in the fishing harbour and to accept an alternative site at Lova Gardens, but later the port dropped the move. Therefore, it is "hasty and unwise'' on the part of ONGC to shift its port operations from a major public sector port, the number one in the country, to a private port like Kakinada Seaports, Mr Sarma said.
