Hathway denies ESPN claim on dues

Our Bureau

Chennai , June 22

HATHWAY Cable & Datacom Pvt Ltd, one of the two multi-system operators (MSOs) operating in Chennai, has termed as "blatantly wrong" the alleged claims made by ESPN-Star Sports that the former hasn't paid the sports channel its dues.

"The true fact is that we have sent cheques for all amounts, including the dues for the month of June 2004 as per the agreement, but ESPN-Star Sports channels have refused to accept the cheques," a Hathway press release said.

The standoff between the two parties has led to the unavailability of the sports channel on the Hathway platform in the city at a time when the Euro Cup football tournament is being telecast.

Hathway has further alleged that "the channel is demanding more money under one pretext or another, which other wise is in defiance of the directives issues by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

A Hathway official told Business Line that set-top box offtake could have taken off, if not for this issue. ESPN-Star Sports, which is a pay channel, is set to telecast the Asia Cup cricket tournament, in addition to airing the ongoing European football championship.
