Workshop stresses on need for earthquake preparedness

THE Dakshina Kannada district administration, in association with National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, conducted a workshop on `Urban Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction Project' (UEVRP) in Mangalore on Monday.
The Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner, Mr Aravind Srivastav, who spoke on `Disaster preparedness', said that Mangalore fell under seismic zone III (moderate risk zone).
Referring to the Bhuj and Latur earthquakes, he said that there was need for mitigation, preparedness and response plans to minimise the threat to human life and property. He stressed the need for developing a techno-legal framework in this regard.
Mr Srivastav also said that the outcome of the workshop would be the action plan for the implementation of the project in Mangalore city.
The project will enhance the local capacities and contribute to the goal of sustainable reduction in earthquake risk in Mangalore city.
This could help the authorities concerned to understand local vulnerabilities and take mitigation measures. Real-estate developers and builders were asked to work towards developing earthquake-proof structures.
Mr Stracey Martin, earthquake hazards researcher, who dwelt on `Seismicity profile of Karnataka', said that the State had been witnessing earthquakes of various intensities from the year 1507.
The coastal belt, including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts, comes under the seismic zone III.
The Mangalore MLA, Mr N. Yogish Bhat, said that rules on earthquake-resistant structures should be strictly implemented.
