Satluj Jal Vidyut set to expand capacity

Our Bureau

New Delhi , June 16

SATLUJ Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd (SJVN), a joint venture between the Centre and the Himachal Pradesh Government, is looking at setting up 2,500 MW capacity in the next five years.

Addressing a press conference here today, the Chairman and Managing Director of SJVN, Mr Apparao, said that besides the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri project that was recently commissioned, the corporation has already begun work on the 450 MW Rampur project in Himachal Pradesh. "The Satluj basin has a potential of 8,600 MW. Of this, the existing and ongoing projects account for around 3,000 MW. The rest remains to be exploited and we are looking at actively pursuing it," Mr Apparao said.

SJVN has approached the World Bank for funding the Rampur project and the multilateral is learnt to have favourably reacted to the proposal. The project is likely to be completed in five years.

According to SJVN officials, the Nathpa Jhakri project was initially part-financed through a World Bank loan. This was eventually prepaid. This way, around Rs 100 crore has been saved, as the cost of borrowing from domestic lenders is cheap. SJVN plans to execute two 240 MW-each hydel projects in the neighbouring State of Uttaranchal, Mr Apparao said. The projects on river Dhauliganga would be run-of-the-river projects on the pattern of the Nathpa Jhakri project and would not require large dams.
