`Central PSEs major contributors to economic growth'

Our Bureau

New Delhi , June 15

IMPROVING financial performance of the central public sector enterprises (CPSEs) taken together is a testimony to the fact that they are not a drag on the national exchequer but are significant contributors to the growth of the economy, said Dr S.M. Dewan, Director-General of the Standing Committee of Public Enterprises (SCOPE).

Dr Dewan was reacting to the 2002-03 annual public enterprises survey released last week.

He said that a startling fact is that the total contribution made by all the CPSEs taken together to the central exchequer only during the last three financial years — 2000-01, 2001-02 and 2002-03 — totalling to Rs 2,05,829 crore, was much higher than the cumulative Central Government investments and loans of Rs 1,46,102 crore at the end of fiscal 2002-03.

Dr Dewan said that sustained empowerment of the PSEs would certainly result in better returns on investments as well as higher contributions to the national exchequer and stronger support to the economy.
